Problem Solvers Caucus Endorses Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum Act

May 7, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Problem Solvers Caucus announced its endorsement of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum Act. This bipartisan bill, presented for Caucus endorsement by Representatives Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) and Debbie Dingell (MI-06), would secure a site for the American Women’s History Museum on the National Mall, ensuring women’s contributions to our country’s history are properly honored in the heart of our nation’s capital.

Since the American Women’s History Museum was established by Congress in 2020, the Smithsonian Institution has conducted an extensive process to find a suitable location for the museum. The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum Act would allow the site selection to be finalized by authorizing the transfer of a plot of land within the National Mall to the Smithsonian Institution. This prominent placement will ensure the museum is centrally located and accessible to millions of annual visitors to Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum Act was introduced by Representatives Malliotakis, Dingell, Emilia Sykes (OH-13), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), and others and has 133 additional cosponsors, 24 of whom are Members of the Problem Solvers Caucus. In March, President Donald Trump backed the legislation and praised Congresswoman Malliotakis’ work to secure support for the proposal.

The bill also establishes requirements for the Museum Council to seek input from a broad range of sources in creating exhibits and programs. This will ensure that the museum’s offerings accurately and comprehensively represent the diverse histories, perspectives, and values held by women in the United States.

“I appreciate my colleagues' bipartisan support to build the Smithsonian Women’s History Museum. Establishing this museum is essential to honoring the trailblazing women who came before us and helped shape our nation. Our legislation has garnered the support of members of Congress from across the political spectrum, as well as President Trump, and together we will establish a legacy for honoring America’s women, right in the heart of our nation’s capital on the National Mall, ” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11).

“Women are integral to American history, and the women who have had such a monumental impact on shaping our nation from its inception deserve to have their stories told. I’m grateful the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum Act has been endorsed by the Problem Solvers Caucus, and look forward to working with my colleagues to secure a place on the National Mall to honor the significant contributions of generations of American women to our history,” said Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06).

"America’s story is incomplete without the women who built it. I was proud to lead the bipartisan charge to establish the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum in 2020, but a museum without a home cannot fulfill its mission. The National Mall is where our nation honors its history—and women’s history belongs there. This bill ensures that future generations will see, learn from, and be inspired by the trailblazing women who shaped our country—right where they should be, at the heart of our capital,” said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01).

“The story of America cannot be fully told without honoring the extraordinary contributions of American women—trailblazers in every field from science and public service to business and the arts,” said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-03). “This bipartisan piece of legislation is an overdue step toward recognizing the unsung stories of American women and will ensure they have a permanent, prominent place in our national narrative.”

"The National Mall is the cultural epicenter of our nation’s capital, and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum deserves to be in this iconic location," said Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24). "I’m proud to support this legislation to make this a reality and recognize the immeasurable contributions women have made to our country."

"I’m proud to support the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum Act," said Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28). "As a father and a firm believer in education, I know how important it is for young people to see the full story of our country. It's past time we honor the contributions of American women. Their stories belong on the National Mall. Future generations should see them, learn from them, and be inspired."
