WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Problem Solvers Caucus, led by Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) and Tom Suozzi (NY-03), announced its endorsement of the Credit for Caring Act of 2025 (H.R. 2036), bipartisan legislation to provide eligible working family caregivers with a tax credit of up to $5,000 to help offset the costs of caring for their loved ones.
Millions of Americans provide unpaid care to aging parents, spouses, and other family members while balancing jobs and household expenses. According to AARP, eight in ten family caregivers pay for routine expenses for their loved ones, spending more than $7,000 annually on average. These costs add to the physical and emotional demands of caregiving and can put a significant strain on family budgets.
The Credit for Caring Act would provide eligible family caregivers with a tax credit of up to $5,000 a year to help cover costs such as home care, adult day care, respite care, and transportation for their loved ones.
The legislation is led by Representatives Mike Carey (OH-15) and Linda Sánchez (CA-38). The bill was brought forward for Caucus endorsement by Representatives Jen Kiggans (VA-02) and Debbie Dingell (MI-06).
“As a nurse practitioner, I know firsthand how important family caregivers are to the health and well-being of their loved ones,” said Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (VA-02). “Millions of Americans make tremendous personal and financial sacrifices every day to care for their aging parents, spouses, and family members, and their compassion shouldn’t go unnoticed. The Credit for Caring Act recognizes those sacrifices by providing much-needed financial relief to families who take on these responsibilities. I’m proud to support this commonsense legislation, and I’m grateful to the Problem Solvers Caucus for endorsing this bill, which will ease the financial burden on caregivers and ensure they have the resources they need to continue caring for their loved ones.”
"Millions of Americans bear the responsibility of being an unpaid family caregiver—a time-consuming, physically taxing, and expensive role that provides essential support to their loved ones. Families deserve to offer high-quality, personal care without facing economic strain. This bipartisan bill helps relieve the out-of-pocket financial burden on unpaid caregivers and takes a crucial step toward a future that restores dignity and independence for both caregivers and those they support," said Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06).
“Family caregivers provide an essential role in supporting their loved ones during the most difficult parts of life, often while sacrificing their own financial stability. The bipartisan Credit for Caring Act delivers on our commitment of supporting families and ensuring family caregivers have additional financial support to ease the burden of providing care. I am grateful to my colleagues in the Problem Solvers Caucus for standing with me behind this legislation and affirming that no family has to sacrifice dignity in care because of the financial toll of caregiving,” said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01).
“Our country is facing a looming long-term care crisis, and millions of families are already feeling the strain. 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day, and in five years, 6,500 seniors will turn 80 every day. Family caregivers are providing hundreds of billions of dollars in unpaid care while spending thousands of dollars out of pocket to support aging loved ones. By offering a tax credit of up to $5,000 to help families cover these costs, the Credit for Caring Act would provide caregivers with much-needed relief,” said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-03).“I’m glad to be supporting this commonsense, bipartisan bill to ensure families have the resources they need and their loved ones can age with dignity.”
AARP on Problem Solvers Caucus Endorsement:
“America’s family caregivers put family first, helping their parents, spouses and others stay at home,” said Nancy LeaMond, Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer. “They spend thousands of dollars every year on this care, while juggling work and family responsibilities. We urge Congress to put money back into the pockets of hardworking family caregivers by passing the Credit for Caring tax credit.”
