Problem Solvers Endorse Bill to Require Allergen Labels on Medications

December 28, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus announced its endorsement of the Allergen Disclosure in Non-Food Articles (ADINA) Act, legislation that would require pharmaceutical companies to clearly label common allergens present in medications.

The ADINA Act would create a standardized system for disclosing the presence of common allergens in medications, similar to existing requirements for food products. This crucial safety measure would help protect millions of Americans with allergies who currently face challenges identifying potentially dangerous ingredients in their prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines.

The bipartisan, bicameral legislation was introduced by Representatives Dean Phillips (MN-03), Mike Lawler (NY-17), Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), and Mike Gallagher (WI-08) and has 49 additional cosponsors, 12 of whom are Members of the Problem Solvers Caucus. The bill was brought forward for Caucus endorsement by Representatives Phillips and Lawler.

“Everyone has a right to know what’s going into their body, whether it be medication or food,” said Congressman Dean Phillips (MN-03) “Without proper labeling, taking medication for a simple illness could have detrimental or even deadly side effects for people living with severe food allergies. I’m grateful my constituent, Adina, and her family brought this issue to my attention, and I encourage my colleagues to support the ADINA Act for a safer, healthier future for those with food allergies.”

“Protecting the health and safety of its citizens is one of the most basic functions of government. That’s why I am proud to be an original co-sponsor of the ADINA Act, which will require the labeling of prescription and over-the-counter drugs for the top-nine allergens and gluten,” said Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17). “Patients have a right to know what is in the medications they are given so that something designed to help them doesn’t wind up hurting them as a result of an allergic reaction. I will continue working with my colleagues to move this common-sense bipartisan legislation forward.”

“Our children should never face a life-threatening allergic reaction when taking life-saving medication. That's why I am proud to cosponsor the ADINA Act, which will help ensure medication meant to make life easier doesn’t instead put them in danger,” said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05). "I’m glad the Problem Solvers Caucus came together to endorse this bipartisan, bicameral legislation to protect the health of our families.”

"Individuals with allergies and intolerances must be fully informed about every ingredient in their prescription medications to make well-informed decisions regarding their treatment," said Problem Solvers Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01). "No one should ever fear a life-threatening allergic reaction to medications that are meant to enhance their health and well-being. I am proud of our Caucus for leading the charge on this bipartisan, bicameral bill, which will ensure that medications meet the same stringent labeling standards as food products."
